New music guide The Neu Bulletin (4th November 2014)

DIY’s daily new music guide, featuring Rosie Lowe, vōx and Bruising.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Rosie Lowe - London, Concrete

The last two tracks offered out by Rosie Lowe - both taken from a debut EP - are the very definition of a step up. Previously her murky synth pop was doused in mystery - now it’s clear as day. ‘Water Came Down’ and ‘How’d You Like It’ preview a debut LP, out early 2015.

THE BIG NEU THING:
vōx - Better

“My body ached from beating myself up,” sings Los Angeles’ vōx, a newcomer who claims it’s “better to be hated.” The almighty rush of acclaim that awaits might be difficult to get used to, then. ‘Better’, her debut track, comes off like a chirpy piano track turned upside down. Every note is out of place, the beat an intentional misfit. vōx arrives as an outlier, and she wants it to stay that way.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Bruising - Honey

As instant a crush as they come. Bruising is a new UK outfit featuring a member of unsung gems Swimming Lessons. With that band departed, ‘Honey’ - a debut track - offers a bright glimpse of what’s to come. Sweet-toned guitar parts overlap with distant vocals that could have been sung from beneath a pile of snow, they’ve so dug down. What’s immediately clear is just how sharp and incessantly catchy ‘Honey’ is, the kind of song built on pop punk staples and ready to dive into the future.
