New music guide The Neu Bulletin (4th September 2014)

Madrid’s The Parrots head up today’s new music guide, also featuring Hawkon and Dinner.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
The Parrots - London, Sebright Arms

Much has been made about Madrid band Deers’ sudden assault on the senses, with their recent sell out gig in London ranking as one of the best Neu’s witnessed in yonks. Those guys are BFFs with The Parrots, another gnarly Madrid export sporting grizzly rock ’n roll with piercing fangs to boot. Tonight marks their first headline gig in the capital - no doubt Deers will be in attendance too.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Hawkon - Touching Air

Back in June, a little-known crooner based out of London debuted his smooth-vibe’d ‘1000 Questions’ debut. Schooled in Dev Hynes-approved West Coast funk and equally indebted to the capital, Hawkon’s first track has since dithered off the internet only to be replaced by something even more assured, ‘Touching Air’. This latest cut is defined by sweet idiosyncrasies - jolting synth notes, sudden bursts of queasy bass - but on a pure, basic level, it’s also a gorgeous love song. It’s no surprise to learn Hawkon collaborated with the Kindness-associated Blue May for this one.

Hawkon plays London’s Sebright Arms on 17th September.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Dinner - Going Out

Say hello to Captured Tracks’ latest signing - the brilliantly odd, peerless Dinner. Coming straight out of a dodgy QVC commercial and the GTA Vice City soundtrack, this one-man oddball has a new EP (‘OUI!’) due out via Distroyer. ‘Going Out’ kicks back, sips a crazed drug cocktail, and steers straight into the night. Fucked up disco pop at its most disarming.
