THE GIG
Childhood, Telegram w/ Palma Violets - London, Coronet Theatre
While Palma Violets celebrate a not-ridiculously-successful-but-also-not-too-shabby 2013, the support acts look to the future. Childhood have all of a sudden morphed into a beast of a band, chugging out 6 minute giants like it’s no big deal. And Telegram are giving nostalgic rock’n’roll a kick up the backside.
THE BIG NEU THING
Velvet Morning - Paranoia
Southend-on-Sea’s Velvet Morning don’t sound like the kind of bunch likely to be daunted by the echo-chamber of their own thoughts. Rather than being a tense, hyper-conscious shell of a song, ‘Paranoia’ opposes its title by running free into a cave of psych-enhanced expressions. Nods to Manchester staples collide with a ’60s-referencing waltz, all amounting to a song supreme with confidence, finitely aware of just how freaking cool it is.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Kaleida - Tropea
Christina Wood and Cicely Goulder’s second song to date is as minimal and refined as their previous; the synth strut of ‘THINK’. Again, what begins as a tempting but not all that attention-grabbing number suddenly launches into a monster of a chorus, slicked back and dosed in cool. The production is cuttingly sharp, with drama-drenched lyrics being backed by a sinister cause. KALEIDA know what they’re doing and exactly where they’re headed.
