New music guide The Neu Bulletin (6th August 2015)
Every weekday, DIY delivers a dose of new music - today’s guide picks out Tigercub, Grace Acladna and Owlis.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Tigercub
London, The Old Blue Last
Brighton forces combine tonight at East London haunt The Old Blue Last. Tigercub lead the charge. Credited as a lynchpin for the seaside’s current batch of exciting new bands, they’ve been in the middle of everything for a couple of years, and new single ‘Destroy’ sees them setting off on the warpath.
THE BIG NEU THING:
Owlis - River
Everything flutters by in the folk headrush of Owlis’ ‘River’, but sitting somewhere in the middle is a eureka moment. Plucked guitar patterns do most of the work, only they give way to the kind of arrangement you’d find in classical folk recordings, or even a chart-bothering pop track. The song is taken from a gorgeous two-part single that lives somewhere in the heart of the English countryside, dusting itself off from dried-up autumn leaves.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Grace Acladna - London
Grace Acladna doesn’t do things by halves. When things are going astray, she sings about how “London is burning and it’s all my fault”. And from the self-made artwork to the meticulous production on her debut EP via Hometown Records, she finds solace in tiny details. ‘London’, her latest track, is a well-grounded pop song defined by its desire to break free - a tough balancing act, but Acladna pulls it off.
