New music guide The Neu Bulletin (6th January 2015)

DIY previews every band playing tonight’s Hello 2015 show at London’s The Old Blue Last, plus we recommend Portland band Divers.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

The Magic Gang, Corey Bowen, Felt Tip, Realms (Hello 2015) - London, The Old Blue Last

Tonight, it’s the first of four new music showcases put on by DIY at London haunt The Old Blue Last. Instead of giving you the usual batch of new music tips, below we’ve given a quick guide to every band playing this free (!) post-January blues extravaganza.

Realms (On: 7.45pm)

Very little is ‘out there’ on Realms at the moment. They specialise in the kind of ghostly musings that aren’t too distant to someone like Grouper, hiding in the quietest corners. On ‘At The Edge of a Dream’, they filter this influence into something more direct, one of the most reluctant strands of pop.

Felt Tip (On: 8.15pm)

Felt Tip scrawl their emotions out in bold colours. Everything showcased to date ups the heart-on-sleeve stakes, powerful displays of colour being filtered into razor-sharp, disjointed songwriting.

Corey Bowen (On: 9.00pm)

We’ll have a sip of what Corey’s having, because in the space of a short few months this Middlesborough kid’s begun to stand out as a very different prospect to the standard mould. His ‘Midnight Dolphins’ EP is a collection of oddities, some of which morph into solid gold.

The Magic Gang (On: 10.00pm)

From an outside point of view, it might look ridiculous, seeing so many people bang on about a band with just two tracks to their name, both of which are almost a year old. But this Brighton bunch have plenty more up their sleeves, side-projects being birthed every other day. They’re also one of the brightest live prospects around, a ‘gang’ in every sense of the word (except they won’t mug you on the street, hopefully).

Divers - Tracks

“You grow up and your ears get fucked up,” Portland’s Divers so astutely observe. But guess what? A band like this will always raise attention, no matter how battered those senses are. Generations could unite to a group like this, their triumphant ‘Tracks’ number raising the roof in a messy flash of energy. It’s taken from a debut album, ‘Hello Hello’, out February on Party Damage / Rumbletowne Records. Listen above, via Impose, who run an ace introducing interview with the group.
