THE GIG
Sivu, Thumpers, Night Works - London, Barfly

With links to Alt-J and intelligent pop tracks pouring out of the system, Sivu is the big draw in tonight’s all-star Barfly bill, which also includes Thumpers (whose stock is rising by the minute) and Night Works, fresh from releasing one of the year’s most underrated debuts in ‘Urban Heat Island’.

THE SONG
NAH - mind driller

Lancaster, Pennsylvania producer NAH has a whole album’s worth of messed-up beats, all tied to the future. ‘Mind Driller’ is the sound of your heart flipping inside out and pumping deathly insects instead of plain ol’ blood. It’s devilish to the very core, fiercely projected nastiness that prompts head-spinning, out-of-body reactions. Not for the faint hearted, but then neither is Arca, or bo en, and you can add NAH to the list of producers trying daring, adventurous feats and pulling them off in front of a crowd of chancers. Don’t go saying NAH to NAH.

OTHER NEU BUSINESS
W∆NR - Can’t Get Money
Cityscape - EP by W∆NR

The best thing to employ a cheesy Mac symbol since Alt-J? Perhaps. W∆NR’s ‘Can’t Get Money’ employs comforting, Casio synth sounds, collapsing convention into a cuddly ether. Bass womps enter the fray, sending a sheen of cool through futuristic filters. Limitless ideas run riot here. They might need a little reining in, but if the Oregon group pull that off, they’re onto something.
