New music guide The Neu Bulletin (7th January 2015)
Vagabon and YAK feature in DIY’s daily batch of new music tips.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out of the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE BIG NEU THING:
Vagabon - Persian Garden
On their latest cassette release - tagged under “social studies”, fyi - New York’s Vagabon finds various ways to flood the senses. It’ll either come in a harrowing lyric that sticks in the conscience, or it’ll arrive from a soft drone that gradually envelops, guitar lines bringing forceful noise in unorthodox form. ‘Persian Garden’ seems to explore the ugly side of human beings, a brutal and often frightening reality that can only be met halfway with beauty.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Yak - Hungry Heart (Live at Shacklewell Arms)
Yak are of a rare form. They’re the kind of band that’s spoken about in hushed tones way before anything official’s been released, as if they’re a mysterious creature biding their time. Truth be told, they’ve been there to witness for months, playing hyped-up shows across the capital, frenzied displays of noise rock putting this group firmly on the map. They’re newly signed to Fat Possum, with a new release anticipated very soon - for now, catch this live footage of a recent Shacklewell Arms gig.
