THE GIG
Angel Haze - London, Scala
A rare London visit from a prolific New Yorker who’s spitting out demos day after day. Every track of Haze’s to date is upfront and direct, a no-holds-barred experience, so expect the live show to be much same. Which all means this is an essential gig.
THE SONG
Young Wonder - Seventeen
Both extremes of Ireland duo Young Wonder’s sound come to light here, in a track from their new ‘Show Your Teeth’ EP. The harsh, ever-experimental electronic eccentricities of Ian Ring’s production clash headfirst with Rachel Koeman’s constantly shifting, sweet-as-candy vocals. We say clash, but the two segue together like they’ve always belonged in the same environment, and that’s what makes these guys so exciting.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Jesse Ruins - Laura Is Fading
Jesse Ruins’ debut full-length is titled ‘A Film’. The Japanese trio have never lacked ambition but by all means this could be Nobuyuki Sakuma and co.’s most wild-eyed turn yet. ‘Laura Is Fading’ certainly sounds like the opening to a cinematic piece, where ice-like chimes step into the foreground while a camera pans out on our proverbial protagonist.
