New music guide The Neu Bulletin (8th July 2015)

DIY’s new music tips, featuring Le1f’s London show and a track from Sui Zhen.

The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.

Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.

THE GIG:
Leif

London, The Nest

With his emergence last year, nobody knew quite what had hit them when Le1f sprung up on the scene. His convention-defying, attitude-crammed delivery remains a shock to the system. The only sensible thing is to ignore tonight’s tube strike, hop on a bus (right now) and make it over to Dalston.

THE BIG NEU THING:
Sui Zhen - Take It All Back

Plenty of new music contains a lifetime supply of effects, like it’s there to distract or defend from what’s actually under the surface. With Sui Zhen, the story’s different. This Melbourne native could pen direct-as-it-gets pop giants, exposed beyond repair, but instead she coats simple hooks in dreamy, ‘80s nodding synthetics. It’s out of choice, not survival mode, and that’s what makes ‘Take It All Back’ a smart introduction. Debut album ‘Secretly Susan’ is out via Remote Control Records.
