News The Neu Bulletin (8th May 2014)
DIY’s new music guide is a Great Escape special, featuring Le1f and Alice Boman.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. We can’t please everyone, sorry.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “big Neu thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.
THE GIG
Alice Boman - Brighton, Dome Studio Theatre (23.15)
New ‘What’ EP fast approaching, Alice Boman’s sweet, drifting but resolute take on songwriting is sure to be a big draw at The Great Escape. We premiered the title-track from her new release back in February and since then it’s become one of the standout tracks from any new artist this year.
Le1f - Brighthelm (1.30am)
There’s nothing stopping Le1f in his pursuit of radicalising and changing the face of hip-hop. Bold claims, but that’s how this NYC rapper operates - recent ‘Hey’ EP is a forthright introduction, not just unafraid, but actively encouraged to lay its cards on the table. Watch his only TGE appearance if you’re one for late nights.
THE BIG NEU THING
Mo Parker - Fold
Joining the ranks of SOHN and Kwabs in giving soul-spliced electronics a cause, Mo Parker is a new, virtually unknown artist making a rude introduction with ‘Fold’. “One false move will make me fail,” he sings in this debut, neatly summing up his perfectionist approach to things - if one slight element went awry, he’d be nothing. But by pulling such disparate parts together and, Parker announces himself as a future star.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS
Lydia Ainsworth - White Shadows
The week can’t continue without acknowledging new Arbutus Records signing Lydia Ainsworth. Her grand, stately works of cinematic triumph make a vital first appearance in debut single ‘White Shadows’. Part movie closing credits, part ghostly ambience, this is a head-bendingly beautiful work, one putting mere nature to shame. ‘Right From Real - Part 1’ is out 10th June.
