Spies - London, Sebright Arms

Dublin newcomers Spies debuted their waltzing, winter-dressed ‘November Sun’ on a Neu Bulletin two months back. Their crafty, gravity defying guitar pop has come on leaps and bounds ever since. Their first London headline show is a must-see.

Whatever London’s Looks are dosing themselves with, they’re ending up with the same punch-packing electronic leaning aesthetic that arrives on Warpaint’s forthcoming second album. That’s a very good record, and honestly, ‘Everest’ by Looks could easily slot right in if members swapped round. Echo-drenched and moody to the bone, true to its title this song climbs and climbs until it’s king of the world. ‘Wasted’, too, is another strong impression from the atmospheric-obsessed wannabee giants. Looks’ future, err… looks good.

Hawkon - Burn Me Down

Back in June we shared a mysterious, stirring debut track from London-based producer Hawkon. His second track to date, ‘Burn Me Down’, is an even more curious creature. It creeps in corridors and nestles up to dark corners. A milky, floating voice is a constant, but the rest of the song explores until it burns and flickers out. Originally from Bergen in Norway, he’s now based in North London, is Hawkon. Still, there’s something in ‘Burn Me Down’ that gives the impression of someone exploring a territory totally exclusive to their music, immune to trends and operating in its own, fascinating space.
