New music guide The Neu Bulletin (9th June 2014)
DIY’s batch of new music tips contains Blaue Blume and Junk.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Some of the music you’ll like, some of it you won’t. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery.
THE GIG:Blaue Blume — London, The Old Blue Last (Free)
Gigs aren’t in short supply tonight. There’s Merchandise, launching their new ‘After the End’ album with a show at Islington Academy Hall. Madrid band Deers make a tantalising live debut at Sebright Arms, too. But it’s in Blaue Blume’s Old Blue Last appearance that we’ve found a gig of the day - the Danish band are peerless, sounding like very little else on this strange planet of ours. New EP ‘Beau & Lorette’ is a huge step up.
THE BIG NEU THING:JUNK — Car
“Get your shit out of my caaaar,” bellows out the opening line of JUNK’s road-tripping new single. Not a single second spared, JUNK don’t fuck around - mess with their woozy, daydream sun-glazed punk and they’ll kick you out on the sidewalk. Based out of York, the Estella Adeyeri-led trio get jumped up on a US college rock aesthetic, big, bouncing melodies at the top of their agenda. This track’s taken from an EP of the same name.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:Liu Bei — Atlas World
The second half of a debut single on Transgressive imprint paradYse, Lui Bei instantly shake off accusations that they’re a more inexperienced version of Manchester’s MONEY. First track ‘Infatuation’ shook the walls, looked up to church spires. Its other half ‘Atlas World’ is a different beast. Again it’s made out of choral, sombre parts, but it’s electronic-led, finding sweet relief in empty space.
