New music guide The Neu Bulletin (Camp Howard, Dasher, Ani Glass & more

A couple of years ago, Gwenno Saunders stepped far out of the shadows of her former incarnation in The Pipettes and won the Welsh Music Prize for her album ‘Y Dydd Olaf.’ Her sister Ani has been following a similar, perception-shattering path for a little while, but with the release of latest single ‘Geiriau’ she’s making a bold breakthrough. While there are similarities between the sisters’ work, Ani’s material under the pseudonym Ani Glass taps further into that rich mine of vintage synthpop with a contemporary glacial edge. But as well as having a storming, propulsive beat, her latest single also shows off Ani’s deft songwriting ability. Meaning “words,” ‘Geiriau’ could be about a relationship, but it could just as equally be a comment on a general lack of communication in today’s society. But even if you don’t understand the Welsh lyrics, Ani transcends language with her shimmering take on pop. (Eugenie Johnson)

There’s evidently something in the Glasgow water at the moment - the Scottish city seems to be spewing out ridiculously fun bands with a killer knack for choruses like there’s no tomorrow. Vying for the hook throne, Marble Gods nail, jangly, glittery pop-rock with ‘Big Baby,’ and have also taken the added liberty of simulating the wavy depths of an aquarium for the matching video. They support fellow Glaswegians and local faves The Spook School next month, on 18th May. (El Hunt)

Jagjaguwar’s newest signing Dasher have been turning more than a few heads in the US recently, and their first full thrash into existence, on new single ‘We Know So’, is one without limits. The band, led by drummer and songwriter Kylee Kimbrough, are joining Japandroids on their upcoming European tour, and ‘We Know So’ channels the Canadians’ untamed fire by way of the screeching feedback of the likes of METZ and Girl Band. For a first statement, ‘We Know So’ places Dasher at the forefront of new, thrashing punk bands, and is completely irresistible. (Will Richards)

Hailing from Richmond (the city in Virginia, USA rather than London’s finest deer-spotting destination) Camp Howard make sharp, punchy pop with just a hint of hazy dreaminess - a bit like a tasty bowl of rum-based party grog. Their latest - ‘Juice’ - meanders as much as it stomps; an addictive balancing act. Rather fittingly given that Easter is just gone, the four-piece are set to release their new EP on May 12th, on Egghunt Records. (EH)

Bedouine is Azniv Korkejian, a nomad-of-sorts, who’s lived everywhere from Saudi Arabia to the USA, growing up with Armenian parents in Syria. This constant displacement feeds into ‘Dusty Eyes’, the first taster of the singer’s debut album, a song for cold nights in unfamiliar places, gorgeously backed by sixties-style folk. The track wanders and drifts with no real final resting place, but no lack of passion - it’s presents Bedouine as an artist to find solace in, when nowhere really feels like home. (WR)
