It’s something of a challenge to ram this idea out of your head: The idea that David Byrne really has re-incarnated himself, placed himself as the frontman of the newly-formed Theme Park and forced his fellow band members to re-ignite ‘Remain In Light’-era Talking Heads.
‘Milk’’s raw percussion, repetitive guitar hooks, coupled with the lack of knowledge we have on the Theme Park, would lead many a conspiracy to form on the basis of this being an old recording of the 80’s icons; a demo ruffled up and given new legs for the 21st century. Theme Park are based in London, they’re a four piece and as far as we can tell, David Byrne doesn’t crop up in any of the promotional photo shoots for the band.
Byrne-indebted or not, ‘Milk’ recreates a lively, carnival atmosphere, so foreign to many people’s ears that it’s bound to cause a ridiculous amount of excitement through London and beyond. What they do, they do with incredible finesse and assurance. So long as they can shake off the Talking Heads comparisons and offer a more unique collection of songs, Theme Park might present the dawning of a new era for pop music. They’re that good. Just don’t go considering asking them if they grew up listening to Bryne and co… It might touch a nerve or two. That or they’ll embrace the comparison, like any same bunch would.
