Neu This Week In New Music (27th October 2012)

Lulu James, Temples and Solomon Grey feature in this week’s round-up of new music happenings.

Neu’s weekly rundown of the past seven day’s new music happenings aims to improve your miserable hungover Saturday morning with the persistent, truthful hammering in of the fact that new music is alive and well, and we’re surrounded by new artists doing great things. And in case you’ve spent the past week way too busy to indulge yourself in these newcomers, Neu’s rounded up the very best, the biggest signs of ‘great things to come’ from a whole host of fresh faces. We were also fortunate enough to bring you plenty of premieres this week, so if you’ve yet to check out new cuts from Moses Gold, Love In Azores and Triptides, now’s the time.

TRACK OF THE WEEK
Temples - Shelter Song

Technically this song’s been floating around for a while, and if any clear-headed new fan of Temples is thinking straight, it’ll be their favourite amongst the band’s several demos. All this excitable talk about the London neo-psych band and we’d yet to see any signs to real progress, beyond the promising first takes. But news emerged this week that ‘Shelter Song’ was coming out on 12th November through Heavenly Recordings. All anxiety was put to rest. Do the same as us by turning this up loud, pretending the ‘60s and Tame Impala never happened, and rejoicing in the sound of a band going places.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Lulu James - Be Safe

It’s rare that a music video will grab your attention to such an extent that a middling song that you might not have otherwise given warranted attention comes into being, and exposes itself as something a little bit special. Lulu James made an impression on Neu - she made one of our monthly mag mixtapes - but this re-recorded version of ‘Be Safe’ and its accompanying video, all monochrome beauty, is enough to take things up a notch. It’s given us the belief that she’s on the way to becoming one of 2013’s breakthrough artists.

DISCOVERY OF THE WEEK
Solomon Grey

Tom Kingston and Joe Wilson - both based in London - are the creators of one of the most exciting new projects we’ve come across in recent months. Synth-pop can often leave you cold and numb, distant from the message of the music and its true intentions. But there’s something about this Solomon Grey project, in its ability to transgress genres and fuse TV On The Radio-style energy and vocals into a fast-paced hypnotic pop track. Stream the video for ‘Firechild’ below. It’s similarly enchanting:
