Neu This Week In New Music (29th March 2014)
Neu’s picks of the week features Alice Boman, Tara Carosielli and All We Are.
This weekend, a big proportion of music lovers will spend their time on the phone, or on Eventim or some other site promising a new batch of Kate Bush tickets. If you’re ‘Running Up That Bill’ by holding the line or simply crying in despair, there’s a good chance you’re better off spending your time catching up on the week’s best new music. Because who knows - one day these artists could be charging hundreds of smackers for a month long residency in a capital city. We’ve been handed superb songs from Haerts, PRIESTS, Home School, Colleagues and Iyes - but below you’ll find our absolute highlights.
Here’s the best of what happened this week in new music:
TRACK OF THE WEEK
Alice Boman - What
Sometimes it’s better to just ask questions and wait for the answer to filter through. Assured and assertive types have their place, but it’s a restless, inquisitive soul like Alice Boman’s that stands out. “Who”, “What”, “Why” - all three of these filter through ‘What’. In the background, piano keys refuse to settle, too. There’s no given standard, no correct answer. Like being lost in a forest and not giving the slightest care about how to get home, it’s a sense of wonder that seizes the conscience in this song.
VIDEO OF THE WEEK
All We Are - Feel Safe
Last week’s ‘Discovery Of The Week’ just got upgraded to first class. That’s largely thanks to the creative whizz of Liverpool trio All We Are’s debut video. It has everything: Massive wide-lens shots of the band looking suave. Faux fur. Shattered mirrors. Floating people. Not only that - floating people doing their floating thing next to beautiful architecture. How does that even happen? All We Are are quickly living up to hyperbole-backed expectations. Their sensitive funk strut is only the start of it - the buck probably doesn’t even stop at this excellent video. 2014 is theirs for the taking.
DISCOVERY OF THE WEEK
Tara Carosielli
Premiered on DIY earlier this week, ‘Sanity’ isn’t Tara Carosielli’s debut, but it’s easily her standout track to date. Consider all the hype being diverted to SZA Stateside - Carosielli deserves at least a small fraction of that attention. Her routine is similar; lacing glossy, futuristic production with layer-upon-layer of woozy vocals. It’s not quite direct pop music, not quite conventional R&B. It’s the opposite of ‘Sanity’, in actual fact - a little bit of madness creeps into the scene, and that’s what makes it so special.
