News This Week In New Music (4th May 2013)

Majical Cloudz, Snakehips and Milo M feature in this week’s new music round-up.

The fact that yesterday was spent by a vast majority of music-lovers on the internet watching a loop of Alan Partridge dancing to Daft Punk suggests this new music round-up’s coming at a good time. It’s the beginning of a weekend. You’ve likely already got sore heads and you’re questioning whether to watch ‘Partridge Gets Lucky’ just one more time. But steer clear: It’ll only leave you ever more uninformed about the exciting new releases that’ve come out in the past seven days, none more so than the below - our track, video and new discovery of the week:

TRACK OF THE WEEK
Majical Cloudz - Bugs Don’t Buzz

Have you ever tried actually singing along to one of Majical Cloudz’s songs? It’s mighty tough. It involves some real deep, detailed pronouncements, everything projected like a chant but drenched in some customary emotion. It’s riddled with slip-ups, and it’s a wonder Devon Welsh’s voice doesn’t fall to pieces midway through a song like ‘Bugs Don’t Buzz’.

That voice is at the centre of this song, just like it is for every other track on Welsh’s ‘Impersonator’ debut. And every note explodes into the foreground, like a rush of traffic. Detailing ‘slimy wet darkness’ and the cheesiest of songs, what might appear simple is actually defined by a meticulous approach, impossible to replicate. And that’s the magic of Majical Cloudz.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Snakehips - On & On

This wasn’t supposed to happen. A jumbling together of archive footage being hailed as the best video from the past seven days. But Snakehips’ ‘On & On’ clip has landed at one hell of a good time. First, guest vocalist George Maple is taking off, turning heads with her own soul-strewn tracks. But more important than that: This video features skateboards and bright luminous colours. And when you peer out of the window and get a taste of an endless summer, this is the only video you need as a companion. Snakehips always captures a perfect moment, however fleeting that moment might end up being.

DISCOVERY OF THE WEEK
Milo M
Suburbia by Milo M

Milo M is a fascinating new songwriter whose 2012 EP ‘Portraits’ has since disappeared. Removed from existence. Voila, just like that. It’s anyone’s guess as to why these songs were swept under the carpets only to be re-unveiled, but no doubt about it, it’s a wonder why ‘Portraits’ didn’t take off when it first came out. How Milo M isn’t something of a household name already is beyond us, but ‘Suburbia’ is surely the first-step in achieving as much.
