How a pop song should work.

Let’s face the facts: most of us are going to waste our lives, counting down the hours in offices until it’s time to clock off, managing the money until the weekend, drinking too much and producing too little, years upon years spent doing nothing but consuming. And then there are others who seem to make up all the dead air that we leave behind – people like Rory Atwell. Having already been in one of the millennium’s first buzz bands in the shape of Test Icicles, he’s not really gone away since, having spent his past couple of years producing some of the best records of the past five years under the guise ‘Bratwell’, but it was only really a matter of time before he came back to the fore with a sound all of his own.

Warm Brains is the title that he’s working under now, finding time in amongst the kind of hectic working schedule that would cause most sane people to have some form of a breakdown to put together enough songs for a full length, due out June 2011. Before that though, there’s the matter of the debut 7”, which features the brilliant ‘Old Volcanoes’ as it’s A side. It’s a touch… how to put this… indie, but in a way that’s been warped to suit the creator’s needs. Perhaps what shines through greatest is Atwell’s unique understandings of how a pop song should work – his voice is never the strongest, at best sounding similar to former band mate Dev Hynes’ efforts under the Lightspeed Champion moniker, but it just about manages to rein in this swirling mass of a track.

What next for Rory? Well, live shows are promised later in the year to back up the LP, followed by – well, god knows. It could be anything – and it most likely will be. Try not to feel ashamed.
