What’s the best way of finding out lots and lots about a new artist in quite a short period of time? Just ask them lots of questions really quickly.
What’s the best way of finding out lots and lots about a new(ish) artist in quite a short period of time? Just ask them lots of questions really quickly.
We put our quickfire Q&A to Zun Zun Egui, who are on the verge of releasing their debut album ‘Katang’ through Bella Union (read out review here). Here’s what the band’s Kushal Gaya had to say.
Why did you, personally, join the band?
Well, when forming the band, there was nothing else i could think of doing or able to do…
Where did you all meet?
Yoshino and I met at Easton Swimming pool in Bristol, because we were learning Butterfly style together.
What’s the best thing about being a band in Bristol?
It’s relatively small compared to London or Shanghai, so it’s easy to get together to rehearse and meet.
What’s your favourite ‘being in a band’ perk?
Oh my Lord! There’s a few :
- Spicy Houmous, Original Houmous, Houmous with Olives, Crazy Houmous, and Bluedumbell Houmous.
- Carrying loads of heavy gear around to play our shows, the last time we had this opportunity, we had to carry it over two or three fields in a muddy festival! That was cool because i am really into building my core strength and getting fit at the moment.
- Other than that we meet interesting people on tour, sometimes, and eat loads of carbohydrates.
When you first started to get into music, who was your favourite musician?
Danyel Waro and Ti Frere.
Name one album that would appear in your Top Five of all time so far.
‘’Bwarouz’’ by Danyel Waro
If you had to learn a new instrument, what would you choose?
I would like to properly master the Kayamb.
Describe your album, ‘Katang’, in three words.
Katang, Katang, Katang.
Which is your favourite track on the record?
Track 11 the secret track, ooops…..
What’s the hardest thing about self-recording?
Not having a second pair of ears.
Where would you most like to be right now?
In the Cirque de Mafate in La Reunion, hiking.
What would your superpower be?
Got to be Hot Flying. It gets cold up there.
What’s your most unappealing habit?
Looking the wrong way.
Who would you most like to go on a huge world tour with?
Chris Morris.
Would you ever go solo?
Sure, when I get my MOBO I will definitely go solo.
What was the last album / single you bought?
‘Airports For Light’ by The Vandermark 5.
What is your music-purchasing format of choice?
Vinyl for stuff I REALLY like. But I still buy CDs and sometimes MP3s.
Recommend us a new band.
KOGUMAZA.
Where would you like to be this time next year?
I would like to be in a good place.
What’s next on the cards for Zun Zun Egui?
Touring, writing, recording, this is how we do… and maybe a collaboration or two with some exciting artists if all comes together!
Zun Zun Egui’s new album ‘Katang’ will be released on 3rd October via Bella Union.
