Apple Music is unveiled, launching on 30th June

Long-awaited contender to Spotify has been unveiled in San Francisco, with the help of Drake, The Weeknd and Zane Lowe.

Apple has launched its long-awaited Apple Music streaming service at this year’s WWDC conference, San Francisco.

Officially available from 30th June, it will be available for $9.99 a month, and the first three months will be available for free. There’s also a separate $14.99 monthly fee, which allows you to share the service with up to six family members.

Introduced via a ‘history of music’ video, the service promises to “change the way you experience music forever.”

The service aims to make “technology and art… work together, at least at Apple.” Calling the music industry a “fragmented mess”, Jimmy Iovine promised “one complete thought” around music. Labelled a “revolutionary music service”, the app aims to streamline the experience of enjoying music. It allows artists to share music directly with fans. “When you upload your music to Apple Music, anything can happen,” says Iovine.

Apple Music includes a worldwide 24-hour radio station called Beats1, broadcast from three cities - LA, New York, London - and with Zane Lowe amongst the hosts. Julie Adenuga will host live from London.

Via Connect, artists can publish and post their music directly to fans, with pushes to Facebook and Twitter. Every single artist can have a profile and upload directly. They can also share behind-the-scenes photos, lyrics and additional cuts like remixes.

The WWDC conference featured a speech from Drake and closed with a performance from The Weeknd, of his new single ‘I Can’t Feel My Face’.

Android users will also be able to access Apple Music later this year. Watch an introductory video below.
