Bayonne navigates between two worlds on ‘I Know’

The Austin-based artist is about to support Sylvan Esso on their UK tour.

Last year, Austin-based artist Roger Sellers – better known as Bayonne – released his debut album ‘Primitives’ on City Slang.

Now Roger’s already planning a second Bayonne record and ahead of it he’s shared new one ‘I Know’. Like his work on ‘Primitives’, it’s a track built on hypnotic loops that pull you in with their airy charms, snapping, propulsive beats and twinkling melodies that weave in and out. While it’s uplifting on the one hand though, there’s also a slight sense of melancholy running through the track.

That’s not entirely surprising because, as Roger explains, there’s a duality behind his new track: “The basic themes of ‘I Know’ are regret and a struggle between two worlds, whether that be tour life versus home life, relationship struggles, or that other internal side of yourself that can be hard to reach. I spent a lot of time on the road last year and this was the first song that I wrote when I was back at home. It was a period of re-adaptation.

“The whole “I Know” part is crying out after you know that you’ve messed up and you feel helpless to correct your wrong. It’s that feeling of no turning back and feeling like you defeated yourself and someone else as well”.

In November, Bayonne is set to support Sylvan Esso on their (mostly sold out) tour of the UK. Before that though, he’s playing a headline show at London’s Sebright Arms on 3rd November. Tickets for his headline date are on sale now.
