Chemtrails get scuzzy on ‘Watch Evil Grow’

Mia Lust and Laura Orvola – better known as Chemtrails – are adepts at making fuzzy, lo-fi yet catchy tunes. Within those tunes they’ve told tales of savagery and spirituality in a post-apocalyptic world, with Mia also opening up about her place in the world as a transgender woman.

Now the pair are gearing up to release their debut album proper, ‘Calf of the Sacred Cow’ on 9th February via PNKSLM. Like all of their output so far, the whole record’s been produced in Mia and Orlova’s living room and it’s set to see them delving deeper into psychedelic power-pop as well as having some of their most aggressive garage-rock numbers to date.

The two elements of their sound come together in harmony on their latest single ‘Watch Evil Grow’. On the one hand it’s filled with scuzzy guitar riffs and lo-fi vocals, but at the same time it’s also got a few pop-inspired harmonies and percussive licks. They pull off the balance effortlessly, resulting in a delicious garage-pop blend.

Speaking of the track, the band say: “Watch Evil Grow is about how postmodernism has ripped the teeth out of the counterculture over the last 30 years. Everything is ironic; everything is irreverent; nothing is worth taking seriously. All the while there’s real evil growing in this world - although I admit that I’m not sure what to do about it”.
