Listen to the charmingly rough’n’ready alt-folk of ‘Mona’ from Southampton’s Cult Film
Fans of (Sandy) Alex G will find something to love in today’s Neu Pick.
Southampton-based Cult Film - the project of Chapman Lee - is releasing his debut EP ‘Mona’ via Bournemouth cassette label Devil Town Tapes next month, and its title track and single is today’s Neu Pick.
Written about everyone’s favourite cartoon vampire of the same name (yep, we’ve obviously had the theme tune stuck in our heads all day), ‘Mona’ is a charmingly rough’n’ready slice of alt-folk that takes cues from the likes of (Sandy) Alex G.
In just two minutes, the track creates a dulled but charming atmosphere, lifted above folky singer-songwriter tropes by panned percussion and a noodling lead guitar.
The singer describes the ‘Mona’ EP as a “15 minute auditory fantasy in hopeful naivety and feeling like nothing at all,” and it comes out on 22nd March.
The cassette is available to pre-order here - Cult Film will play a release show for ‘Mona’ at Bournemouth’s Sixty Million Postcards on 21st March alongside Soot Sprite, Death by Shotgun and Moya Silk.
