On the drums
James Murphy appears on the new David Bowie album
‘★’ was also informed by Kendrick Lamar, according to producer Tony Visconti.
With Davie Bowie’s 25th studio album ‘★’ due out 8th January, producer Tony Visconti has given further details about what to expect.
The album consists of eight tracks, and according to Visconti, LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy drums on two songs. He was initially set to co-produce the album, but other commitments got in the way.
In the same Rolling Stone interview, Visconti says early sessions were inspired by Kendrick Lamar. “We wound up with nothing like that, but we loved the fact Kendrick was so open-minded and he didn’t do a straight-up hip-hop record. He threw everything on there, and that’s exactly what we wanted to do. The goal, in many, many ways, was to avoid rock & roll.”

Update: Turns out Bowie was also inspired by Death Grips for his new record. According to Uncut, he references Boards of Canada on album cut ‘Somewhere’.
