Joy Crookes recruits Sam Fender for latest album preview ‘Somebody To You’
The pair became mates after hanging out at Little Simz’s 2022 Mercury Prize afters, obvs.

Ahead of the release of her sophomore album ‘Juniper’ next month (on 19th September, to be precise), Joy Crookes has continued to amp up anticipation for the record with new single ‘Somebody To You’, which features none other than Sam Fender on backing vocals.
A contemplative, soul-baring cut, the song sees Joy reflect on what she calls “the reliance I had on someone I’m very close with and their reliance on me”, considering “whether that needed to change in order for me to understand myself better.”
Explaining more about how the collab with Sam came about - unsurprisingly, a vocal match made in heaven - she continues: “Sam and I met at the Mercurys. We drank with Guy Garvey and ended up at Little Simz’s afters (I know, so many name drops) and became mates.
“A year later, he was down in London and I collected him from King’s Cross in my Suzuki and we bolted down Euston Road bitching about music and the state of the world to end up at Studio 13. He blasted some BVs out and played me his new record before it came out. I wouldn’t properly understand “shy bairns get nowt” if it wasn’t for Sam. My fav geordie mate.”
‘Somebody To You’ follows ‘Pass The Salt’, ‘Carmen’, ‘Perfect Crime’, ‘Mathematics’ and ‘I Know You’d Kill’ to be the sixth single lifted from ‘Juniper’ - an LP that was born out of a period of personal upheaval, but which gave Joy a sense of purpose during difficult times.
