Mutes get their fill with ‘Starvation Age’ EP

Birmingham band Mutes do everything but introspection on their new EP, ‘Starvation Age’. The stars are practically waiting to be gazed at, here, and if anyone told the four-piece to crawl into their shells, they’d ignore the advice and look further outwards.

Out next week with One Note Forever, this five-track EP isn’t just a promising step from a band in their early days. It also navigates the kind of territory that heavyweights tend to own. ‘Boyish’ spurs itself on from a dreamy opening into something truly possessive, and musically they rinse the system of anything previously tried and tested. They barely sound alike, but there’s a mentality shared between Mutes and a group like Deerhunter, both willing to try new things when all the options already look to have dried up.

DIY is premiering ‘Starvation Age’ in full below. Pre-order the cassette via One Note Forever.
