O-SHiN believes in the impossible on ‘Walking Water’

The Berlin-based artist’s new alt-pop gem is today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from O-SHiN.

Two years ago, O-SHiN moved to the Swedish countryside for three months with five musicians, producers and a video artist. While in the cabin, they started collecting sounds from the forests, lakes and rivers that surrounded them, as well as a vast array of exotic instruments the found in a nearby barn. The ideas that were born from that time, as well as the samples they created over the summer, helped to kickstart O-SHiN as a musical project.

Now based in Berlin, O-SHiN has used her experiences in Sweden as a foundation for her new work. “It was a big adventure for everyone involved”, she says in a statement. “The location was dreamlike and had so much more to give than expected – like the collection of crazy instruments I’ve never used before. The lake, the campfire, the calmness in nature and making music. There’s nothing more beautiful to me then recording music like that”.

Her second, self-released single ‘Walking Water’ distils the sounds and concepts from those three months into a slice of epic yet leftfield pop. O-SHiN’s distinctive vocals float across a bed of organic, familiar percussion, ambient waves and an attention-grabbing, slightly warped melody. Speaking of the track in a statement O-SHiN said: “It’s about taking risks, even if it seems crazy. It’s about believing the impossible can happen”. With her own unique sound, she took a distinct risk, but it’s more than paid off.

O-SHiN will be playing at the Auster Club in Berlin alongside Melis on 4th December.
