Oh800 dial in on modern day bullshitters with ‘Character Building’

Dance-punk banger takes on those who value ‘experience’ over payment - it’s today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Oh800.

Modern day frustrations flow throughout Oh800’s ‘Character Building’. A tense, dance-punk takedown of the nonsense idea that people should work to raise their profile instead of, y’know, for money, it makes the depressing danceable.

“I’ve had it up to here with character building,” they snort sarcastically, imitating a myriad of chancers preying on the creative industries’ goodwill. “It won’t pay you much at first, but may lead to something interesting… We don’t have much of a budget, but it could be good experience for ya,” comes the half laughed, half sighed hook, over clunking cowbells and frazzled guitar lines. When it all pulls back into a moment of reflection, they’re admitting to their own tendency to “be a bit of a space cadet.” It’s a real ‘we’ve all been there’ malaise - one that’s clearly built upon years of silent observation of the scrambled world around Oh800.

Their debut single, ‘Character Building”s set for a September 23rd release via Infinite Jest Records, with their full-length coming later this year. They play London’s Moth Club on September 29th.
