Sloan Peterson delivers a burst of reverb-laden rock on ‘Rats’

The Australia-based songwriter’s slightly vintage new single is today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Sloan Peterson.

A couple of months back, Sloan Peterson – aka the project of Australia-based songwriter Joe Jackson – unleashed ‘105’, a slice of vintage, jagged garage rock that presented her own vision of the genre after writing songs and making her own DIY videos for six years. Now, she’s gearing up to release the ‘Sloan Peterson’ EP on 8th September via Mirror Records, and to give us another taste of what to expect, she’s shared a brand new single.

‘Rats’ is another slice of scuzzy, lo-fi alt-rock accompanied by Joe’s own voice, which sits somewhere between the urgent yelps of punk and smooth pop tones. A quiet little breakdown almost right in the middle of the track gives breathing room in-between the riffs, but things are soon back to full-force, delivering reverb-laden guitars in droves, with just a little bit of a vintage spin. The simple, black and white video even gives a little nod to her DIY roots, which just helps top it off.

Speaking of ‘Rats’, Joe said: “‘Rats’ was written about low-lifes who wanna make something out of themselves, ratbags and teenagers who are on their own in a big city. I had a pretty rough couple of years between 13-16 living up in Brisbane, being involved with bad company, never attending school among other horrible situations, and this song speaks to how I was feeling after coming out of such a whirlwind, trying to start all over again in Sydney by myself at only 16”.
