Neu Pick:
Swimming Girls aim high on ‘Tastes Like Money’
The ’80s channeling debut single is today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Swimming Girls.
We’ve been pretty spoilt by massively promising debut singles this year - from the polished introduction from Pale Waves to the Warpaint and Blood Orange-channeling Londoners ALASKALASKA - but ‘Tastes Like Money’, the first offering from Swimming Girls, might just take the biscuit.
Mixed by Marta Salogni, who’s worked with Shura, M.I.A. and Sampha among others, ‘Tastes Like Money’ is unashamedly ’80s but doesn’t border on pastiche - it’s forward looking and unflinchingly confident.
The track’s vocal melodies are ones to obsess over, and they’re set over instrumentation that borders on shoegaze. It’s the vocals, though, that take ‘Tastes Like Money’ from being introspective and make it anthemic.
The track makes up half of a AA-side coming out this summer, and it’s a storming introduction. Listen below.
