Throws bring the wonk with their self-titled debut album

From the ashes of Tunng comes a left-field new pop prospect - their debut album is streaming in full on DIY.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Throws.

Rebirth can be a funny old thing. Take Throws, for instance. Formed from the ashes of cult folk-meets-electronica band Tunng, on their debut album - premiering below as today’s Neu Pick - they’re gunning straight for the pop throne.

That’s not to say it’s all shiny-shiny polish, mind you - there’s an odd slant to everything on offer on ‘Throws’. Drawing the mind the similarly gloopy brains of Weaves, Throws take the pop template and treat it like a ball of Flubber. Standout ‘Punch Drunk Sober’ pairs wobbly bass with stabs of shrieking guitars (and some real, actual shrieks too), while even ‘Sun Gun’’s hark back to their more classic folk influences comes masked by a wobble and bounce. Romantic without succumbing to schmaltz, weird without losing sight of the power of a pop hook, it’s a captivating return from Mike Lindsay and Sam Genders.

We’ve got the first stream of Throws’ ace debut album below as today’s Neu Pick. It’s released this Friday June 10th, and they’ll be celebrating at London’s The Waiting Room on the 15th - all the info on that is right here.
