Van Zeller channel insomnia on debut 7”

The Bristol band’s new release, mixed by Spring King’s Tarek Musa, is today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Van Zeller. Alongside Idles and LICE, Van Zeller are leading a new charge out of Bristol, albeit with no recorded music to their name. The four piece’s debut 7” - mixed and mastered by none other than Tarek of Spring King fame - is coming out as part of this month’s Flying Vinyl series, and is a thunderous introduction. Between them, ‘All Or Nothing’ and ‘You Can’t Lose’ are as fun and vicious as anything we’ve heard so far this year. The former’s line of “won’t you take me back to Maidenhead” isn’t the most romantic of refrains, but there’s something about the band’s chanted choruses and the breakneck speed that both tracks travel at that makes this a blisteringly exciting introduction. Talking about the recording process for the 7” - we now understand just why the pair of tracks sound quite so crazed and intense - the band say: ”Both the tracks represent cycles you can’t break out of, that continue day in, day out. Therefore, we felt the best way to record them would be to do it without any sleep. “We stayed up for 36 hours before recording, and then went straight into the studio to track them both in a single day. It was slightly traumatic, but we feel it helped to enhance the cathartic and relentless feel of the songs.”
