Reading & Leeds 2015
Wolf Alice prepare for Reading 2015: “this feels like a big one for us”
Capping off a momentous summer of festival milestones - with a massive headline tour fast approaching - Ellie and Theo swing by for a pre-set natter.
It’s been a momentous summer for Wolf Alice. From covering DIY HQ with supernatural amounts of glitter, to crash landing into Glastonbury with their stand-out debut ‘My Love Is Cool’ just out, Theo Ellis and Ellie Rowsell drop by for a chat not quite sure what year it is. “It’s almost like this is the next festival season,” ponders Ellie. “This feels like a big one for us. Glastonbury feels so far away.”
There’s no question that todays show is another huge milestone, Reading and Leeds being a festival close to Wolf Alice’s hearts. Making their way up the ranks, with the backing of their squad all the way, today is one of the last glimmering jewels to go onto their crown; a gigantic sold out headline show at Brixton Academy being the fuck-off diamond capping it all off. “Cos the album’s out now, it’s a big deal,” agrees Ellie. “Playing Reading feels a lot bigger this year, like a celebration.” “We’re all on the same wavelength,” says Theo, gesturing towards an AWOL Joff Oddie and Joel Amey, “very excited.”
Obviously Wolf Alice have packed an all important accessory - glitter - though they begin to panic when told of Swim Deep’s epic transformation into Spin Deep yesterday at Reading; with the help of a dizzying woman spinning round in a neon dress on stage. “We’re not doing any of that!” Ellie exclaims. “We don’t have any time to come up with anything,” says a woeful Theo. “I guess we’ll have to play as well as we possibly can. Probably a good thing to do.”
“I’ve only got one colour, and it’s horrible, a yellow,” Theo says, reflecting on his sparse glitter selection for today. “I’m pretty annoyed about that. Well, no, I have two, but the other one’s horrible.”
Looking ahead to their milestone headline tour after festival-related festivities end, Wolf Alice’s sense of time progressing is only going to get more warped still.
“We haven’t really managed to do our own UK headline tour with the album,” Ellie says, “so it’ll feel very momentous for us. We’ve been playing a similar set for a while, but we’ll completely change it up and make it fresh”
“Its the first time we’ve had a chance to think about production as well, and put a show on. We’re obviously not gunna bring out the pyro or anything, but it’ll be slicker,” Theo adds.
And as for a new series of merch for the headline tour, Wolf Alice are planning to sell glitter, and Wool Phallus branded “woolen dildos,” according to Theo. Ellie rolls her eyes, and he offers a quick disclaimer - “lets stick clear of that shit.”
