Yonaka make giant opening gambit with ‘Run’

Group play DIY’s free The Old Blue Last show tomorrow night (28th July), with Spring King.

Tomorrow night (28th July), Spring King headline the last of three, free entry DIY nights at London’s The Old Blue Last. July has been a new music extravaganza, but it’s set to conclude with fireworks thanks to Yonaka.

Hailing from Brighton, this four-piece like to hang their songs on a knife edge. One second in and they’ll be a fully-fledged pop outfit with pristine hooks. The next, they’ll be wrestling with chunky guitar parts and giant, speaker-blowing noise. They’re a fascinating conundrum, clashing soul with all-out hedonism like Alabama Shakes on a rampage.

We’re excited to be putting them on for tomorrow night’s OBL show. So excited, in fact, that we’ve got the first play of ‘Run’, their dizzying new single that throws everything into the fire. Check out ‘Run’ above our introductory Q&A with the group.

What’s Brighton like as a hub for making music? There seems to be a big group of exciting new bands around.

Brighton is a great place for making music. It’s vibing and there’s good music going on. Also, pretty much everyone here is a musician - so people want to hear your music!

What was your first practice session like? Who brought what to the table?

The practice was good - the sound kinda just came out. We just started making loud noises and felt empowered. It was the right mix of different people and influences - before all getting together, we went through our fair share of making not so great noises.

When did things start clicking as a band? Do you still feel like you’ve got a long way to progress?

It didn’t take long at all - it just felt right. So after about a couple of months, we felt comfortable with the sound and carried on writing songs. We are always progressing and will continue to for as long as we go on - we always want to better our writing and our performance so it will always be a progression.

Spring King, Yonaka and Drones Club play DIY’s Don’t July To Me Baby at London’s The Old Blue Last on 28th July. It’s free entry, but you’ll need to be 18+.
