Brawlers – Romantic Errors of Our Youth

Brawlers have built a debut album that doesn’t put a foot wrong.

Brawlers - Romantic Errors of Our Youth

“We’re accused of falling in line, every song doesn’t have to rhyme,” cry Brawlers, midway through the four-gun salute of album opener ‘Annabel’. It’s a defiant, playful message that’s spat with a wink and pulls back the curtain for ‘Romantic Errors of Our Youth’ to take centre stage. It’s a position the Leeds four-piece relish. After a brief pause to realign the snowball that ‘I Am A Worthless Piece of Shit’ started, Brawlers have adjusted to the velocity and come out swinging. From the grimy dancehall of ‘Drink & Dial’ through the prescribed escape of ‘High Again’ until the hammering finale of the title track, ‘Romantic Errors of Our Youth’ is an unrelenting flourish of confidence.

It may be a more rough and ready assault than their debut EP offered but ‘Romantic Errors of Our Youth’ shares a similar message. Brawlers know they’ve made mistakes but there’s a celebration in that acceptance. “I was a cannonball, I drank too much,” they admit on ‘Nervous Breakdown’ while ‘N.O.R.E.S.T.’ sees a downtrodden realisation that they’ve “been out of luck for so long,” before the song, and the band bubble over in screaming catharsis. This group therapy is both affecting and charming as Brawlers expose themselves in a slew of punk vitriol and natural showmanship that pops in the spotlight.

‘Romantic Errors of Our Youth’ deals in abrupt honesty but does so with a wicked grin. The forward motion that has carried Brawlers this far is captured then amplified as the band light their heady subject matter and start the party around the raging inferno. With the flames flickering across their face, Brawlers look endless. In digging up the romantic errors of their past and accepting their imperfections, Brawlers have built a debut album that doesn’t put a foot wrong.
