Ecca Vandal - Looking For People To Unfollow
3-5 StarsA varied collection that exhibits Ecca Vandal as a truly exciting rock act.
Sonically, ‘LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO UNFOLLOW’, this second full-length from South Africa-via-Melbourne’s Ecca Vandal, occupies a huge space. Punk and hip hop collide on ‘BLEACH’, with its deeply satisfying bursts of guitar and vocal screams. “Bleach and razor blades / Cut it all off and start again,” she sings, the song’s rawness and confrontational nature solidifying it almost as a mission statement for the record. Meanwhile, ‘LEVITATE PART 1 + 2’ is synth led with R&B influences, and ‘DID A LITTLE MORE TO FORGET’ sees Ecca backed by jazzy piano and saturated drums. Still, it all feels tight, the multitude of ideas executed with purpose.
There’s a defiance to its noisiness, too, with driving punk rock littered with rhythmic intrigue and power vocals (‘SORRY! CRASH!’), or the self-assured ‘CRUISING TO SELF SOOTHE’ on which she screams through her anger: “Cruising on my own/ I’m moving up where I belong”. A varied collection that exhibits Ecca Vandal as a truly exciting rock act.
