EP ‘Matching Hearts, Similar Parts’ is a half moody / contemplative and half bouncy / animated offering from these fresh-faced Brighton boys, who cite Mozart and Vivaldi as two of their influences. Whilst these two composers are not directly comparative with this EP, Flashguns sure know how to create an atmosphere. Single ‘I Don’t Not Love You’ is a perfect example, with exuberant opening chords that could have been easily mistaken for the start of a Killers’ B Side. However, after a few seconds of spirited indie-bopping, the pace slows and the track morphs into a dreamy Mew-esque offering.
‘Bells at Midnight’ and ‘St George’ are much the same, changing the tempo at a whim to throw us into a different mood as quickly as the wind changes. With three very palatable tracks behind them, end track ‘Racing Race’ is somewhat of a let-down. A seven minute epic that would suit a moment of spiritual contemplation, it fails to engage on any level. Despite this, Flashguns have produced, on the whole, an agreeable EP, that reserves them a place on the ‘Ones to Watch Out For’ list.
