Hockey Dad - Brain Candy
3-5 StarsIf a fuzzy but fun album’s what you’re after right now, look no further.
On third album ‘Brain Candy’, Aussie duo Hockey Dad find themselves building upon their more laid-back surf rock roots and refining them into something altogether more scuzzed up and satisfying. Propelled forward by hefty opener ‘In This State’, there’s a sense of playful control present across the record, giving its tracks a real vibrancy, even during their grungier moments. Less scrappy than previous efforts, it’s also an album that sees them venture further from their comfort zone than ever before, with reflective midpoint ‘Itch’ showcasing that perfectly. Striking the right balance between slick and energetic, if a fuzzy but fun album’s what you’re after right now, look no further.
