Ash - Space Shot

For the uninitiated on The A-Z Series this is a great place to start.

With Ash having ditched albums in favour of releasing only singles, we cannot help but wonder if all of that press about the group being one of the all time great singles acts has gone to their heads somewhat. Still, that doesn’t mean that the praise has been undeserved ever and thus far their current endeavour has failed to disappoint. Said project is the release of one single a fortnight, themed loosely around the alphabet and running for a year and features the fantastic ‘Space Shot’ as the letter H.

Thus far The A-Z Series (as it is being called) has been something that mainly the hardcore Ash fans have jumped on board with, it feels however that ‘Space Shot’ is the song to bring the band back to the masses and hopefully onto the pop charts. It’s one of the strongest singles in the series so far, and features a chorus so huge that it can only have come from the pen of one man.

Whatever the opinion of Tim Wheeler’s vocals his ability to condense sci-fi b-movies into all encompassing pop-rock songs is undoubted. When the chorus kicks into gear with the title refrain you’ll feel as if you’re piloting an X-Wing down the Death Star trench. Still, this isn’t the Ash of old. Throughout the series we’ve seen the band experimenting with drum machines and synthesisers more, but rather than sounding like the dirge in the charts at the moment this is a really individual and very Ash take on synth-pop.

For the uninitiated on The A-Z Series this is a great place to start, and a subscription comes highly recommended.
