Burns - Lies

The relentless power of the synths cannot fail to enthral.

There appears to be no greater time to be a UK dance producer than 2012. UK producers are making their presence felt across the dance / pop spectrum led by Calvin Harris, who has perfected the art of slightly generic but ever so successful electro rave pop and taken that across the pond to America where they have utterly embraced the sound they have depressingly prosaically renamed Electronic Dance Music (EDM).

Burns is another UK producer who is very much in that vanguard; an example of his growing influence is the news that he has reportedly worked on Rihanna’s forthcoming album. ‘Lies’ is his major label debut single and it shows all the qualities that have led him to be in such great demand.

The formula is incredibly simple yet incredibly effective. Stick a female vocal from a slightly obscure late nineties US soul song, in this case ‘It’s Over Now’ by Deborah Cox, over the top of a massive hulking ravey backing track and you have as near as is possible to a sure fire dance floor filler. There is very little subtlety but the sheer scope and sound of the beats and the relentless power of the synths cannot fail to enthral.

Dance pop has a near ubiquity in the charts right now. Expect Burns to make his presence felt in the same exalted company very soon.
