An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump - Buy A Life
3 StarsAn Experiment On a Bird in the Air Pump look set to brighten up your mundane winter existence.
As the so-called ‘alternative’ music scene continues to churn out the same old standardised musical outfits, with fashion prevailing over song content and concept seeming more important than innovation, An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump are something of a breath of fresh air.
Named after an 18th Century oil painting, the noise rock three-piece combine grimey rock with lo-fi overtones and gothic raging vocals in a way that is admittedly rather unnerving, but strangely engrossing. Tracks like ‘Silent Hour’ and ‘Smear’ showcase the bands inordinate energy with vocals sounding like a sort of a 90s Karen O in terms of an organic inner swagger and self-belief. This, teamed with lyrics like ‘I accept this fate / I accept self hate / You burn my knees /Slice me up until my thighs / But you’ll never see the wounds that I keep inside’, makes for a multi-layered sound with a seemingly apathetic skuzzy backdrop juxtaposing some well thought out lyrics.
Whilst An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump occasionally lean to a rather unpleasant warbling, their debut EP undoubtedly stirs the curiosity of the listener. If you’re bored of the same old Jo Wiley ‘Track of the Week’ pop rock and like the sound of a sort of gothic Juliette and the Licks, An Experiment On a Bird in the Air Pump look set to brighten up your mundane winter existence.
