With a four-year gap since previous EP ‘Celestial Bodies’, ‘subtext’ finds Cambridge four-piece Lemondaze taking a subtle shift towards a new direction, showcasing a greater fluidity to their sound across a five-track release that’s as enveloping as it is cathartic. Opener ‘polari’ announces itself with shimmering vibrations before guitars splash in and quickly widen. ‘c=bain’ then sees its bassline take centre stage to create an ominous feel before the track recedes into darkness after a dramatic finish. The EP’s second half is where any progression from past recordings can be heard most, in particular via the skittish beats of closer ‘terra’. Consistently powerful, skilfully layered while never crushing, it’s a therapeutic return.
