Blood Orange, KOKO, London

5th July 2016

Dev pirouettes, gyrates and vogues effortlessly around his band.

The voice of Atlanta spoken-word artist Ashlee Haze fills Koko; her rendition of ‘For Colored Girls (The Missy Elliot Poem)’ makes for a striking opener. Almost serpentine in his dancing, Dev Hynes pirouettes, gyrates and vogues effortlessly around his band as he works through set of tracks from all three Blood Orange releases. ‘Champagne Coast’ from 2011 debut ‘Coastal Grooves’ and ‘Cupid Deluxe’’s ‘You’re Not Good Enough’ receive an enviable reception.

Despite the impressive physicality of the show and the heady live adaptations of the more sample-heavy numbers, there are moments that miss the unflinching tightness his productions are notable for.

Lightspeed Champion and Test Icicles before that gave Dev a decent, albeit somewhat dorky, platform, but neither project saw him exhibiting his indisputable multifaceted talents in the same way Blood Orange does. Clearly not one to sit idly by, it would come as no surprise to see that once these headline shows become more common practice, they begin to stand up more competitively with what we hear on record.
