Courtney Barnett wows the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury 2015
This is her biggest achievement to date, and she takes it in her stride.
“There’s so many flags,” says Courtney Barnett, searching out one of the biggest crowds she’s ever played to. “That one’s Australia. We’re from there - Melbourne, Australia.” As if the Down Under entrance song and her AC/DC guitar strap didn’t give it away already. Or the tales about sunken suburbia, double garages and roadkill. Chances are, anyone here knows exactly who Courtney Barnett is, and they’re waiting for the rest of the world to catch up.
Beginning in scrappy, gung-ho fashion, Barnett shuns her lyrical knowhow for more intense musicianship. To begin with, it’s all about ‘CB3’, the thrashing live trio who’ve fast become as much as a clincher to her appeal as the songs themselves. They share in-jokes, give cheeky nods and burst out laughing in between songs. Having thousands watching doesn’t faze them in the slightest.
It’s towards the end of Barnett’s set that she plays even more on her own strengths. ‘Depreston’ is a downtrodden but perfectly put-together song about relocation, and each word beams out from the Pyramid Stage, you might as well be reading from a lyric sheet. The same goes for ‘Avant Gardener’ and ‘Pedestrian At Best’, two songs that blend cutting wit with savage guitar work, standing out as her strongest work. No introductions required, this Melbourne talent is one-of-a-kind, and she can count this among her biggest achievements to date.
