Gengahr rinse out Glastonbury 2015 with early afternoon set

Group win hearts with a showcase of debut album ‘A Dream Outside’.

Gengahr frontman Felix Bushe introduces the band’s ‘Fill My Gums With Blood’ as an “old song”. He also remarks that it’s “good to be back” at Glastonbury, like he’s fronting a heritage band post-hiatus. The truth is, this time last year this group had barely made a whimper. Twelve months on and they’ve released one of the debuts of the year, all while everyone else is trying to catch up.

Bushe and co. have yet to experience a real marquee, defining moment where everything clicks and they’re embraced by thousands. A record like ‘A Dream Outside’ won’t stay under the radar though, and their moment will come. Today’s early afternoon set feels like the closest they’ve been to all-out validation, converting a soggy crowd into a chorus of whoops by the time they close.

It’s executed the same way as ever, the tightest of rhythm sections running loops around Bushe’s ghostly vocal. With the exception of guitarist John Victor’s vicious, pedal-stomping movements, everything’s made to look effortless - but this is a band obsessed with exactitude, getting everything exactly right.

Funnily enough, despite Gengahr’s short existence ‘Fill My Gums With Blood’ does strike as an ‘oldie’. It’s a perfect example of their dagger-sharp, dreamlike routine, but it’s shadowed by fresher cuts like the spiralling ‘Trampoline’ and the concrete jabs of ‘Dark Star’. There’s never been any doubt that this is a band on the up, but with each show they play, they’re visibly progressing. It’s a pinch yourself realisation.
