Partybaby begin their quest for world domination at The Great Escape
The Cali punks’ first UK show brought sunshine to DIY’s stage at Horatio’s.
Partybaby’s first UK show was always gonna be a big one. Erupting like a thousand volcanos at once last year with debut single ‘Everything’s Alright’, there was something special about this lot as soon as they took paint to their jackets, throwing down their logo as a permanent statement of intent. Bringing the big American, er, party to the oh-so-British surrounds of Brighton Pier, they prove to be worth every second of the wait, and every scrap of the hype.
Latest single ‘I Don’t Wanna Wait’ opens proceedings, proving it’s three-for-three on their stadium sized pop-punk bangers to date. ‘Your Old Man’ soon follows. From there on out, they duck into that incoming debut album. It’s going to be a scorcher.
“This song’s about running away from home to start a band, it’s called ‘California’,” shrugs frontman Jamie Reed, as if uprooting everything was as simple a decision as what shirt to wear that morning. It’s that spontaneity – that sense of throwing all caution into the heart of a hurricane - that’s threaded throughout everything Partybaby do, and it’s infectious in the extreme. Even a broken finger can’t stop him now - he doesn’t miss a note in spite of its big metal splint.
Jamie’s partner in crime Noah Gersh can barely believe his eyes as he looks out at the crowd amassed in front of him. His early nerves a distant memory, a beaming grin sits atop his face through every second of their all-too-short half hour. No time for treading water though (and besides, Brighton seas are far too cold to swim) - they’ve finally made it across the pond, world domination’s surely next on the agenda.
It’s the closing explosion of ‘Everything’s Alright’ that’s their most glittering reward, the stop-start anthemia hitting like fifty Red Bulls shot straight to the veins. There’s no band out there like Partybaby. Things are about to hit warp speed.
