Swim Deep switch gears at Glastonbury 2015

Late morning set is a bold showcase of old and new.

Swim Deep’s new album, ‘Mothers’, isn’t out until September, but it couldn’t be more clear where they’re heading. From light, breezy anthems to krautrock-nodding monsters, it’s quite the transformation from debut to LP2, and it’s hard to tell if the world’s ready for their grand evolution, let alone a bleary-eyed 11am crowd on day two of Glastonbury.

What’s evident by the end is that these dramatically different songs are giants on their own, but they occasionally sit difficultly. ‘She Changes the Weather’ remains a gorgeous, uplifting number, and new song ‘Fuelho Boogie’ is unbelievably ambitious, chugged experimentalism. On their own, these are ready to be embraced. But they need a little more time to get to know each other.

With their second record, Swim Deep aren’t entirely ditching the staples of old. ‘One Great Song And I Could Change the World’ mixes the two distinct worlds, and in a festival setting it morphs into a clattering force to rival Primal Scream. Whether it’s loopy synth parts or sun-drenched guitar lines, the Birmingham group are undeniably adept at both. It’s clear, though, that when Swim Deep dive headfirst into their fresher cuts, they seem more at home and more willing to do something special. It might take some time, but once ‘Mothers’ is out it’ll make a whole lot more sense.
