In the fantasy world of Major Lazer, a concept originally created by producers Diplo and Switch, things are very much changing. Switch left in late 2011 leaving Diplo solely at the helm, and their new single offers up clear indication of a distinct change in sound.
‘Get Free’’s understated loping reggae rhythm tinged with strange eastern sounding effects and gloopy synth lines may come as a shock to anyone who was enthused by the frenetic jumped up dancehall electro that can be found on their debut album, 2009’s ‘Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do’
This is an example of a pared down, almost sedated Major Lazer. Dirty Projectors’ Amber Coffman provides vocals and her lovely malleable dreamy voice flits over the subtle beats. It all sounds very nice and extremely well put together; however, you want more from Major Lazer. There is an anomalous quality to ‘Get Free’ that separates it from all their previous work.
‘Get Free’ will certainly not trouble the dance floor, but perhaps shows there is going to be a more varied quality to their future output.
