It takes a very, very special group to get away with referencing Princess Leia’s home planet and not come across as ‘wacky’ or overly pretentious. After all, Alderaan isn’t what it used to be these days.
Thankfully, we’re reviewing a Neon Neon track, and not something by Son of Dork, so instead of zany references to molesting Carrie Fisher we’ve got Ace with a capital A synth lines and Gruff Rhys’ brilliantly catchy melodies. Dripping with eighties without ever sounding cheesy or especially forced, ‘I Told Her On Alderaan’ easily avoids the pastiche tag and even ends up sounding authentic and fun.
Utterly different to Super Furry Animals, it seems that collaborating with Boom Bip brings something special out of Gruff. Long may it continue.
