There is a simple but unquantifiable art to making great pop. It’s an art that Londoner Seye has perfected on only his second single. ‘Mexicana Bounce’ has a glorious effervescence to it. A bouncy and easy-going combination of afro tinged beats, Vampire Weekend-like hi-life guitar and an infectious charm make this an excellent pop single.
There is much hype about Seye, who is the brother of Metronomy’s bassist Olugbenga and has played guitar for The Noisettes. It seems all that expertise and experience has rubbed off on him and you can only expect that hype to grow and grow on the back of a single like this. The only probably is it would have been a sure fire summer hit in June but instead sounds rather incongruous in windswept autumn. No matter, Seye has all the makings of a very fine star.
